What is the Literacy Loop™?
The Literacy Loop™ is a cross-age after-school tutoring program structured around reciprocal teaching objectives. High school tutors and their elementary school tutees work together to develop academic skills and increase achievement in reading and writing.

Is the program proven effective?
The Literacy Loop™ program has been highly successful for L.A.’s BEST programs in elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Is the program scientifically based?
The Literacy Loop™ was designed to increase achievement on standardized assessments in reading programs approved by the CA State Board of Education. Each week elementary tutees receive three hours of explicit instruction aligned with research-based strategies and the California content standards.

How do elementary students benefit?
The Literacy Loop™ gives elementary students the opportunity to improve and practice the skills needed for English-Language Arts assessments. Highly trained high school tutors guide tutees, with the support of experienced teachers.

How do high school students benefit?
The Literacy Loop™ compensates tutors for their important role. More importantly, tutors learn about the teaching profession and related careers, receive strategic assistance in preparation for college entry, and provide an important service to their community. Tutors also receive ongoing support and mentoring in presenting themselves as role models, implementing instructional strategies, developing a plan to enter college, and preparing for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).

Are parents involved?
The Literacy Loop™ encourages parents to engage in student-led conferences with their children. During these conferences, elementary tutees share both their work and their learning while setting new goals. The high school tutors are taught not only to communicate with parents, but also to teach the process of student-led conferencing to their tutees.
